Turkey is a peninsular country surrounded on three sides by sea which, because of its geographical position on the Eastern Mediterranean, links Asia with Europe and which has an area of 774,815 km2 and a population of 65 million. Its most important world-famous cities are Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Mersin, Adana and Bursa. The country is governed by a democratic parliamentary regime and its capital is Ankara. Antalya is a city on Turkey's southwestern Mediterranean coast with an area of 20,591 km2 which, because of its temperate climate, natural beauty and historical wealth, is a leading tourism centre and port.
